The picture was shot in about 1913, probably in Columbus, Ohio. The exact date is subject to question, but my aunt, Thelma Elsea, appears to be about one year old in the in the picture and she was born in 1912. It is possible that the occasion was her first birthday. Having a family picture shot indoors at that time would have required the services of a professional photographer and would only have occured on an auspicious occasion.
The picture comes from a collection of old negatives that my father, Arthur Ray Elsea, Sr., inherited from his dad, Archie Ray Elsea. My dad and my daughter, Kathryn Ashleigh Elsea, made contact prints from the negatives during her visit to Ohio in the summer of 1997 and Kathryn brought this print back to California.
The relationships are relative to Arthur Ray Elsea, Jr., son of Arthur Ray Elsea, Sr., who is the son of Archie Ray Elsea and the brother of Thelma Elsea.
